Up to 2006 he was the director the Gallery of Modern Art and the Costume Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence. During this time, in parallel with his activity as keeper, he was also engaged in fostering knowledge of nineteenth and twentieth-century art through exhibitions and other initiatives. He was in charge of the complete restyling of the layout of both galleries as well as the editing of the general catalogue.
He was president of the Museo Marino Marini and is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the Centro Pecci per l’Arte Contemporanea in Prato and the MART of Rovereto. His studies concern in particular Italian and European 19th-century art, on which he has published books and essays of an interdisciplinary nature, organising exhibitions on the subject both in Italy and abroad.
